I think part of the fun of CNY is listening/reading about the fortune of each Chinese Zodiac sign for the new year. I'm not a particularly superstitious person and frankly i believe in free will more than fate or predestination. Of course, that's not to say that i don't believe in Chinese astrology at all. I listen to it, take note of the good and bad things, and heed the advice that i could practically follow (e.g. avoid wearing certain colors of clothes). I don't just believe or follow it blindly.
It was said that the year of dog is good for people with Zodiac sign of rabbit. So, many people had been telling me that it's gonna be a good year for me. Well, the problem is that even though i was born in 1975, i'm not a rabbit. My Zodiac sign is tiger because i was born BEFORE the CNY in 1975, which means that i fall into the previous year's Zodiac sign.
On the eve of the CNY, some fortune tellers were invited to the radio and TV shows to talk about the fortune of each Chinese Zodiac sign. The one on the radio said that people with Zodiac sign of tiger wouldn't have any luck in side income (偏财) but would do well in main income (正财) if we work hard (duh?!). On the contrary, the one on the TV said that we could get lucky with side income, which was equivalent to telling us to "invest" more in lottery. So, which should i believe? Funny that these fortune tellers actually contradicted one another in their telling.
What's funnier was that my mom told me to be careful this year because i would have what the Chinese called the "luck of peach blossom" (桃花运), which means that i would be involved in some relationship problems. She read it from the newspaper and alerted me that i may have courtship that is disruptive to my current relationship. Sigh, i don't know which disturbs me more, she being so superstitious, or she not having any confidence in her own daughter's faithfulness.
