Our infrastructure team couldn't find the root cause and was under tremendous stress for the whole day. They called up the anti-virus vendor and was told to scan the infected PCs in safe mode to clean up the virus, but the virus was still spreading through the network and so we gotta unplug the network cable for the PCs. That was just a temporary measure, and it didn't really help much because the users couldn't do much work without network connection.
Before i knocked off at 6.15pm, the team was still scrambling for a solution. I guess they are gonna work late today. I felt kinda bad for leaving on time when they were working so hard. But then, there wasn't much i could do except giving my moral support, which i could do in JB too, albeit the far distance.
The timing of this virus attack couldn't be any worse. It's appraisal time for these two weeks, and this is so gonna affect their KPIs. On the other hand, this also reflected how vulnerable our network is, as well as our preparedness (or the lack thereof) in dealing with IT disaster.
For the past 16 years, the IT infrastructure of the company was taken care by a person with serious attitude problem and who had worked in the company far too long. Although i won't go as far as saying it's in a mess, it is somewhat disorganized. He simply didn't have a systematic way to manage the IT infrastructure, or maybe he just couldn't care less. So, perhaps having him left the company is a good thing after all, just like removing a virus from an infected network.
