Yes, i'm talking about The Departed.
Watched it last weekend, and for an award-winning movie, i must say that i was rather disappointed. 贝 didn't even finished watching it.
I'm not sure what it was, but the movie just seemed to be lacking some elements. It failed to build up the ambiance and thrill like the HK version. Perhaps it's how the story was told, or maybe the way it was shot, or probably the music, or even the cast.
Oh yes, the cast is definitely one of the factors. No doubt that Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio are good actors, but they just couldn't measure up to Tony Leung and Andy Lau in that movie. I've never thought of Andy Lau's acting as good, but that particular character just suits him very much, which kinda makes Matt Damon pales in comparison. Jack Nicholson was excellent as always of course, but he alone couldn't save the whole movie for me.
Heard that the western film makers are now looking to the east for more movie reproduction. The next one will probably be The Eye (见鬼, "Jian Gui"). The last thriller Hollywood had remade from Asian movie was The Ring, which was another disappointment compared to the original Japanese version. So i wouldn't set my expectation too high for The Eye either.
