There's the Chinese funeral ritual going on now at the ground floor of the HDB block where i stay. Even though i'm high up at 11th floor, i can still hear the noise clearly.
It has been going on for hours already. Besides the chanting, the most annoying part is actually the Chinese opera.
Ok, before anyone accused me of having no tolerance for other religions, let it be known that i've always disliked such type of noisy Chinese funeral all along, even before i became a Christian.
With all due respect to the deceased, is this the Chinese notion of "dying peacefully", literally?
I mean, the person is dead. What is this Chinese opera for really? For the dead or the alive?
Chinese has this idea that the noisier (热闹) a funeral is, the more "face" they have, because it means the family is rich and they have given the deceased a very grand burial (风光的葬礼).
To me, that is crap. I shall not elaborate more lest my pungent opinion is interpreted as insult and disrespect.
All i wanna say is -- let the dead leave restfully for God's sake!
And let the alive have a restful night too.
