On Thursday, the female manager and i went to three branches to do the computer virus clean-up. We started early in the morning and worked till 10pm+. I was dead tired already, and felt even more terrible when the users at the branches passed some remarks like "wow, the virus must be very big that the system's down for 4 days hor?", "so can it be resolved by today or not?", "how can we convince the customers to buy our stuff when we can't even solve our own IT problem for 4 days?". I couldn't possibly tell them that it was the job of the infrastructure team and i was only helping out, as the whole department gotta appear as one team. So i just took all those comments in with a weary smile.
Friday wasn't any better. I was assigned to do the same thing again in the Head Office, and of course similar remarks were heard again. I was in a foul mood as i could fully understand the users' frustration. Even i felt that this whole thing had reached an utterly unacceptable level. In some companies where the IT system is mission critical, the IT staff may even be held responsible and fired for such situation.
Then i heard that we aren't gonna hire someone to replace the manager who was asked to leave. Instead, they are gonna promote one of us, who failed to contain a virus attack and couldn't get the IT system fully functional for a week. I really wonder how we could improve the current system when it was apparent that there's a lack of knowledge and we need someone with the right skills to make things better.
Oh, and another thing, i hurt myself on Friday. Some PCs just couldn't be cured because we simply didn't know what else to do anymore after doing all that we were told. So we gotta reformat or replace those PCs.
The system guys took out all the standby PCs we had and placed them all over the place. And i, being my clumsy self, knocked my knee against one huge CPU lying on the floor. Then i got a terrible bruise on my leg.
On Friday:
Today, still swollen:
What a price to pay for fighting the computer virus.
