Who is there to protect us?

Just as i was still perturbed by the abduction and rape case that happened in Taman Bukit Indah, i read another news on the paper today that made me even more upset.

(This news is also available at the star online)

Imagine how devastating it is to lose two people who are dearest to you due to criminal acts... I deeply empathized with Mr. Tan.

His daughter was raped and killed 20 years ago and the case remains unsolved. I think the perpetrator(s) may have died already. I know it's not easy to track down the rapist(s) when the victim was murdered, yet i couldn't help but wonder if the police had indeed put in any effort to crack the case. I think Mrs. Tan's case would remain unsolved too. There are simply too many cases of rape and snatch theft; how many really get resolved in the end? Unless it's a high-profile case like the rape and murder of Canny Ong that shook the world in 2003, the family of the victims can only wait for a miracle, or bring the unsolved cases to their graves.

We have been living in an unsafe society since 20 years ago. Rape, snatch theft, robbery, homicide... i guess it only gets worse as days go by. Do i sound too pessimistic? Well, tell me if you are still hopeful after reading news like this:

Cop and friends abduct and rape teens
BY ANDREW SAGAYAM

PETALING JAYA: A policeman and several others held two teenage girls captive and repeatedly raped them over several days after abducting them from a welfare home in Hulu Langat.

Masridzi Sat, chairman of Darul Islah Welfare Organisation, said the girls – aged 19 and 15 – related their ordeal to him when he found them early this week.

The elder teenager was found at the Sungai Wang Plaza shopping mall on July 31 while the younger girl was spotted at a bus stop in Section 17 here on Aug 1.

The girls, who had been missing since July 26, claimed they were abducted by a group of men and taken separately to different places – the 19-year-old girl to a house in Kuala Lumpur and the other girl to an apartment in Shah Alam.

Masridzi said the home supervisor had called him about 6am on the day the girls went missing to say that their rooms had been broken into.

The supervisor had gone to check on the girls as they did not turn up for dawn prayers, he said.

The doors of their rooms were found prised open, and the perimeter fencing behind the girls' quarters cut.

The girls later told Masridzi that at least three men had forced their way into the rooms. One of them was a policeman.

"They said they were held captive for days and repeatedly raped," he said.

It is learnt that a 26-year-old lance corporal from the Kampung Melayu Subang police station was picked up and questioned on Tuesday. He was released on police bail yesterday.

Petaling Jaya deputy police chief, Supt Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said police were investigating.

"We have already questioned one of our men and we are on a manhunt for all those involved," he said.

He declined to say why the lance corporal was released so soon.

If those who are entrusted with our safety are the very people who perpetrate the crimes, then who else is there to protect us?
