A sore loser

Sigh, it's back to work today.

I thought it's gonna be a hectic day for me today after being absent from work for 4.5 days, but to my surprise, all my users didn't encounter any problems when i was on MC. Hmm, it kinda makes me wonder why the problems only occur whenever i'm around.

I'll be going off earlier today, as i'll have to return to the dental clinic for the removal of the stitches on my gum. The dentist didn't use dissolvable stitches because she wanted to control the healing process. That was what she told me. I reckon she didn't want the stitches to be dissolved before the wound has healed.

I wonder if removal of stitches is painful. I hope not.

We postponed the final golf lesson yesterday due to the rain, again. It was all sunny in the morning and afternoon, but when it was near late afternoon time, the sky suddenly became overcast and then it rained. It was a good thing to me though, as i didn't feel comfortable in engaging in any sports when i wasn't sure if i had fully recovered from the surgery. Anyway, the lesson was postponed to three weeks later because Carol can't make it for the next two weekends. That's good too, just so that we can have more time practising our swings before the final game on the green.

The cancellation of the golf lesson also meant that 贝 wouldn't miss his favourite sports on TV. No, it's not the World Cup of course; it's the Malaysia Open Badminton championship, live from Kuching. I watched the live broadcast with him, and the men's single sure was one hell of a game.

Our national hero Lee Chong Wei beat World's No. 1 China's player Lin Dan and won the men's singles title for the third year in a row. The exciting part came in the final showdown when Lee Chong Wei was trailing 13-20. Just one point short of winning, Lin Dan couldn't get a single score for the next 7 points and was forced into a deuce. In the end, our hero brought home the victory at 23-21, only that he was already at home ground and the crowd in the stadium just went into a frenzy. I could feel the sensation from the thunderous cheering and clapping of the audience as if i was at the stadium myself. Oh man, what a moment that was.

But wait, there were more to it. Before i proceed, let's check out a word in the dictionary. According to The Free Dictionary, here's the meaning of sportsmanship:

sportsmanship
n.
1. The fact or practice of participating in sports or a sport.
2. Conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing.

Note the phrase in bold in the second definition: "grace in losing". Well, we sure didn't see it from Lin Dan.

After losing the game and while the crowd was celebrating our victory, Lin Dan kicked his racket off the court in a fit of fury. Then during the prize presentation, he promptly removed the medal the moment it was put around his neck, and refused to wear the Sarawakian ethnic headgear that was part of the ceremony. What an utter disrespect to Malaysian culture! After he was presented with the mock cheque, he put it onto the floor and just stood there with a pissed-off face. The Malaysian crowd booed at him upon seeing his unbecoming behaviour.

It was the worst, i tell you, THE WORST showcase of sportsmanship i've ever seen in any sport events so far. You know, if you can't handle being beaten, then don't participate in any competitive games, for there's no guarantee that you can be the winner forever. If you can't take losing in stride, then you didn't just not win a game, you have become a sore loser in life too. That was what Lin Dan was yesterday, a sore loser.

If you search for the phrase "sore loser" in The Free Dictionary, you wouldn't find it. May i suggest this to be added then:

sore loser
n.
1. A person who displays atrocious behavior after losing a competition
2. Lin Dan

And to think that he's representing a big country like China. What a disgrace to his country.
